IDOT Announces Opportunity for Students to Explore Engineering

Engineering Explorer Post to Host Open House in Springfield, Invites Students and Parents to Participate in “First Nighter”

SPRINGFIELD- Since 2004, the Illinois Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) sponsorship of the Engineering Explorer Post 6 has helped students explore the different aspects of engineering through field trips, group activities, and special guest speakers. The Engineering Explorer Post will host its annual “First Nighter” on Thursday, September 15th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the IDOT Central Office – 2300 South Dirksen Parkway in Springfield. This is an open house to explain the program to both students and parents.

IDOT and Engineering Explorer Post 6 have had great success in helping students continue their pursuit of engineering to the college level and as practicing engineers. Currently, the Post has Explorers from throughout the area (Auburn, Beardstown, Carlinville, Chatham, Jacksonville, Pleasant Plains, Rochester, Springfield, and Taylorville).

Exploring is part of Learning for Life’s career education program for young men and women who are at least 14 years old and have completed the 8th grade, through the age of 20. The purpose is to give students practical “hands on” experience in the engineering field and also an opportunity to spend time with and be mentored by practicing engineers and technicians.
