IDOT Announces Construction Lane Closures on Labor Day Weekend

Road Work Will Be Suspended to Ease Holiday Weekend Congestion, Improve Traffic Flow and Safety

SPRINGFIELD - With thousands of motorists expected to travel on state roadways over the Labor Day holiday weekend, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced today that road work will be suspended where possible for the weekend to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow. The advance notice of lane closures for the holiday weekend is designed to aid motorists’ travel plans and improve safety.

“With heavy traffic expected as usual during the holiday weekend, IDOT is providing a list of closures in advance to help motorists plan their trips,” said Acting Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider. “With less construction and heavy equipment in use this weekend, traffic congestion can be reduced, and safety and traffic flow will continue to improve.”

Starting at 3 p.m. Friday, September 2, IDOT will suspend all non-emergency road work and open up all lanes where possible through midnight on Monday, September 5. Some construction zones will continue to have lane closures in effect, due to the nature of some projects.
IDOT is urging motorists to slow down, obey posted speed limits and drive with caution through work zones. Holiday travelers are reminded that work zone speed limits are still in effect wherever they are posted, even where no construction workers are present.

IDOT Highway District 1:

Cook County

159th St. (U.S. 6) from I-294 to east of IL 1 (Halsted St.), for reconstruction with 159th St. Roadway closed from Park Ave. to Center St.; detour posted using IL 1 (Halsted) to Sibley Blvd. and Dixie Highway.

Congress Parkway Bridge; bridge reconstruction; eastbound two lanes open; westbound one lane open.

US 12/20/45 over S & S and I & M Canals; bridge deck overlay; northbound two lanes open and southbound one lane open.

Jodaviess County

IL 78 south of Stockton is closed at the Plum River while flood damage repairs to the structure are being completed.

IL 84 approximately one mile south of Hanover. Replacement of the bridge over a tributary of the Apple River, one lane open and controlled by temporary traffic signals.

Lee County

I-39 from Rochelle to north of Mendota. One lane in each direction as the bridges and roadway are rehabilitated.

Ogle County

IL 2 from Oregon to Byron is closed for reconstruction as the pavement is being removed and replaced. IL 2 traffic is detoured on River Road.

IL 251 over the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Railroad lines in Rochelle is closed to make structure repairs. Traffic is detoured around the bridge on IL 38 and Jack Dame Road.

Rock Island County

I-280 from IL 92 to Airport Road at Milan; one lane open in each direction with traffic using the westbound lanes as the bridges on the eastbound lanes are being removed and replaced.

I-74 ramps at Seventh Avenue in Moline are closed while the bridges over 19th Street are being replaced. Traffic is detoured on 19th Street to the interchange at The Avenue Of The Cities.

Whiteside County

I-88 west of Rock Falls, one lane open in each direction as the overhead bridges are being painted at Matznick Road and at Yorktown Road.

U.S. 30 near the west edge of Morrison, one lane open and controlled by temporary traffic signals just east of the Rock Creek bridge, pavement is being removed and replaced.

IL 40 two miles north of Sterling. Replacement of the bridge over Elkhorn Creek, one lane open and controlled by temporary traffic signals.

McLean County

Interstate 55 from FAI-39 to Veterans Parkway Interchange northeast of Normal; additional lanes project with no restrictions at this point in time. Barrier wall is in place.

Illinois 54 horizontal realignment of a curve one mile south of Bellflower. Road is closed with a marked route detour in place.

Piatt County

U.S. 150 bridge replacement at the south branch of Salt Creek one mile east of Farmer City. Stage construction are utilizing traffic signals is in place.

IL 162 over I-55/70 at Troy. IL 162 will have one lane open in each direction.

St. Clair County

I-64 will have a lane closure both eastbound and westbound from 18th Street to 37th Street in East St. Louis to replace the bridge over Metro-Link in East St. Louis.

I-64 will have ramp restrictions westbound and one lane closed eastbound at IL-159 in Fairview Heights for bridge repairs and constructing a new ramp.

Exchange Avenue will be closed to traffic from 7th Street to 9th Street in East St. Louis to replace the bridge carrying Exchange Avenue over I-55/70. Both the exit and entrance ramps for I-55/70 will also be closed due to the bridge replacement.

15th Street will be closed to traffic from just south of St. Clair Avenue to Baugh Avenue in East St. Louis to replace the bridge carrying 15th Street over I-64. St. Clair Avenue will have a lane closed from east of 10th Street to 18th Street, and Baugh Avenue will have a lane closed from 18th Street to just west of 15th Street in East St. Louis to rebuild the 15th Street bridge over I-64.

Packers Avenue will be closed from St. Clair Avenue/IL 3 to Exchange Avenue in E. St. Louis to allow construction of Relocated I-70 from 1st Street to Industrial Avenue in E. St. Louis and Fairmont City.

Greene County

Eldred-Hillview Road, approximately 4 miles north of IL 108. Bridge project, one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals.

IL 267 over Bear Creek located 3.5 miles north of Greenfield utilizing stage construction/temporary traffic signals.

IDOT Highway District 9

Franklin-Williamson Counties

Illinois Route 37, located .5 miles south of west Frankfort, one lane will be closed for bridge construction with temporary signals in place.

Alexander-Mississippi County

Interstate 57, located at mile marker 3, bridge rehabilitation will need to reduce traffic to one lane both north and southbound.

Old Illinois Route 3, located 0.1 mile east of IL Route 3, has bridge construction that will close roadway.

U.S. Route 60/U.S. 62 at the Mississippi River has bridge construction that will require road to be closed.

Pulaski County

Interstate 57, located at mile marker 5, bridge rehabilitation, one lane open both north and southbound.

Old U.S. Route 51, located in Ullin will need to close one lane for bridge construction. Temporary signals are in place.

White County

U.S. Route 45, located one mile south of Springerton Road, will close one lane for bridge construction with temporary signals in place.

Jackson County

Illinois Route 151, located 4 miles north of Illinois Route 3, will need to close one lane for bridge construction. Temporary signals are in place.

Pope County

Illinois Route 34 at Herod will have one lane controlled by signals for box culvert work.

Illinois Route 146, located 3 miles north of Golconda, will have one lane traffic controlled by signals for bridge work over Simmons Creek.

Perry County

Illinois Route 13, located 1.7 miles east of Randolph County Line, has one lane of box culvert construction with temporary signals in place.

Hamilton County

Illinois Route 242, located 5 miles north of McLeansboro, has one lane of bridge construction with temporary signals in place.

Jefferson County

Interstate 57/64, located at I-64 eastbound lane and I-57 southbound lane, will have traffic reduced to one lane prior to the I-57/I-64 merge to north of Mt. Vernon.
