IDOT and Washington Park Chamber Host Summer Engineering Academy

Program Encourages Interested High School Students to Explore Professional Opportunities in Transportation Industry

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Washington Park Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to host the 2011 Summer Engineering Academy in Chicago. The academy will be held at Ace Technical Charter High School, 5410 S. State Street on July 27, 28 and 29. Two sessions will be held each day, the first taking place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the second from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

“The summer academy provides students with an inside look into the benefits and challenges of the dynamic field of engineering,” said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider. “We encourage all eligible students to participate and learn more about the exciting and challenging career opportunities in the transportation industry.”

IDOT’s Engineering Academy will provide a fun, hands-on program that teaches high school students to use math and science to solve real world challenges in transportation and civil engineering industries. The goal is to provide realistic engineering experience through projects that encourage teamwork, problem solving and practical application.

Projects in the Summer Engineering Academy include designing and building a bridge model while learning bridge geometry, applying loading situations, and then analyzing the success and failure of bridge designs. Students will be placed in teams for the activities and will have a friendly competition to determine the strongest bridge.

The Summer Engineering Academy is free and on a first-come, first-serve basis. Interested participants are to complete and submit the application and parent consent form provided online at http://www.dot.il.gov/diversity/default.asp.
