IDOT and Chicagoland Speedway / Route 66 Raceway Join Forces Again to Promote Traffic Safety

Race Fans Encouraged to Take Safety Pledge

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced today that it is once again partnering with Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway in Joliet to encourage fans to sign traffic safety pledges at four racing events this summer, starting with the STP 300 (NASCAR Nationwide Series) race and the Messina Wildlife Animal Stopper 150 presented by Menards (ARCA Racing Series) on Saturday, June 4th.

IDOT and Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway will team up to ask fans to participate by signing the Buckle Up America pledge: I Pledge to BUCKLE UP, Every Trip, Every Time and that all passengers in my vehicle will be properly restrained at all times. Adult fans will also have the opportunity to sign the Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk pledge, which includes agreeing to always have or be a designated driver. The IDOT outreach booths are located in Champions Park, in the Midway and in the KIDZway section. Fans who sign the pledges will be entered into random prize drawings and offered a commemorative event photo free of charge.

In addition to this weekend’s event, fans are invited to sign the pledges at many other events this summer, including: the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals (NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series) July 7-10th, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race Sept 16th, the Dollar General 300 presented by Coca-Cola (NASCAR Nationwide Series) Sept 17th, and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sept 18th.

“We are pleased to join forces once again with racing fans at Chicagoland Speedway to promote traffic safety and positively impact millions more race fans in Illinois and across the nation,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Gary Hannig. “By promoting programs that increase safety belt usage and prevent impaired driving, NASCAR and Chicagoland Speedway events promise to remain a safe and enjoyable time for everyone. We hope to see many more fans commit to traffic safety this year.”

“We are excited to continue our partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation for the fifth consecutive year,” said Scott Paddock, president of Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway. “We pride ourselves on providing fans with an exciting experience from start to finish, but we also want it to be a safe experience all weekend long. Through our partnership with IDOT we’re able to remind our fans to wear their seatbelts and put safety first each race weekend.”

Several NASCAR drivers have supported the Buckle Up America Challenge program, including: Stanton Barrett, Trevor Bayne, Johnny Benson, Clint Bowyer, Colin Braun, Kurt Busch, Erik Darnell, Carl Edwards, Cale Gale, Travis Kvapil, Michael McDowell, David Ragan, Reed Sorenson, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., along with a wide variety of musicians and entertainers.

Supporting the traffic safety effort this year is American Idol star Crystal Bowersox, who will be singing the national anthem at NASCAR STP 300 on Saturday night at Chicagoland Speedway.

The 2011 program is a continuation of IDOT’s successful partnership with pilot program partners Chicagoland Speedway and NASCAR. Since 2007, the partnership has successfully promoted the message of “Buckle Up, Every Trip, Every Time,” with the Buckle Up America Challenge facilitated by BLU MOON Foundation. BLU MOON Foundation serves the public interest through creating, managing and collaborating on cause-related educational programs and national campaigns.
