Illinois Featured in AASHTO’s Research: Making Strides for Highway Safety

Two IDOT research projects submitted by the department as High Value Research have been featured in AASHTO’s Research: Making Strides for Highway Safety.

Reducing Wrong-Way Driving on Freeways highlights IDOT research project R27-090, which identified a method to identify and rate wrong-way crash locations, as well as low-cost countermeasures that reduce the likelihood of those crashes. Additionally, the project led to a national peer-to-peer summit on wrong way driving countermeasures in July 2013 and the creation of a national guidebook that will be published in 2014.

Science-Based Safety Analysis discusses IDOT’s work as a national leader in the implementation and use of the 2010 Highway Safety Manual. IDOT and the Illinois Center for Transportation (ICT) collaborated to develop a Highway Safety Manual (HSM) Lead State Peer-to-Peer Workshop to support implementation of the 2010 AASHTO HSM publication. The manual, developed and published through efforts by the Transportation Research Board through the National Cooperative Highway Research Program and AASHTO, is the first comprehensive document to provide a scientific, data-supported decision-making tool for effective roadway safety management.

Congratulations and thank you to Technical Review Panels, researchers, and the IDOT staff who were instrumental in the oversight and implementation of these important projects!
