PEORIA – Governor Pat Quinn today was joined by state and local officials to unveil new signs that name a section of Interstate 74 through Peoria in honor of Ray LaHood, who has served as U.S. Secretary of Transportation and U.S. Congressman. The signs will be posted on the eastbound lanes before the Sterling Avenue exit and the westbound lanes before the Murray Baker Bridge.

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced today that in an effort to improve safety at intersections, flashing yellow arrow traffic signals are being installed at numerous Wabash Avenue intersections in Springfield. Two flashing yellow arrow traffic signals were activated on Tuesday at the east and west White Oaks Mall entrances. The four remaining signals, between Veterans Parkway and MacArthur Boulevard, are expected to be installed and operational by Friday.

Schneider announced today that a 72.6-mile network of existing trails, designated bike routes and bicycle-friendly streets between the Indiana and Wisconsin state lines has been selected to become part of the U.S. Bicycle Route System. Schneider announced today that 422 volunteers collected and removed almost 800 bags of trash from state highway roadsides as part of the inaugural Adopt-A-Highway spring cleanup April 18-27. Coinciding with Earth Day celebrations held throughout April, the Illinois Department of Transportation initiative encouraged Adopt-A-Highway participants to target their designated sections of highway over the 10-day period to remove litter and debris that had accumulated over the winter.

To kick off the busy summer travel season, a two-week, law enforcement mobilization will begin May 9th and run through Memorial Day, May 26th. During this time, police will enforce seat belt, impaired driving and other traffic laws 24/7, with a large number of patrols occurring during late-night hours when the most unbuckled fatalities occur on Illinois roads.
