The Physical Research Section is responsible for
planning, coordinating, conducting, and implementing the
Division of Highways’ program of operational research
and development. The goal is to improve the economy and
quality of transportation design, construction,
maintenance, and operation.
The Physical Research Section’s program consists of
individual projects, each of which is directed toward
the solution of a specific problem. Some studies are
conducted by Departmental forces, and others by outside
agencies under contract with the Department. The
majority of Department projects are conducted by the
Physical Research Section. The remaining projects are
conducted by other Bureaus, Districts, Offices, and
Divisions with coordination by the Physical Research
Section as needed. The gathering of data is sometimes
assigned to District offices. Research projects
requiring specialized knowledge or equipment (not
available elsewhere within the Department) are
contracted to outside agencies, with direction provided
by the Physical Research Section.
