The Bureau of Materials and Physical Research publishes guides, manuals, MISTIC reports and miscellaneous supplemental documents that provide assistance to Department personnel, material producers/suppliers and contractors regarding the procedures/programs used to accept/approve certain materials.

Fastener Identification (10/03/08)
The Fastener Identification Guide is a list of markings for producers that have provided approved fasteners in the past. Fasteners are approved by testing on each lot.

2013 Manual for Fabrication of Precast Prestressed Products (11/01/13) This manual provides a source of reference and guidelines for those involved in the inspection, fabrication, and storage of precast prestressed concrete products. It has been prepared with major emphasis on details, practices, and procedures currently being used in the industry. In addition to fabrication techniques, the Manual addresses permissible repair procedures and handling, storage, and transportation of precast prestressed concrete products. Geotechnical Manual (01/12/99) This manual provides a source of reference and guidance on departmental guidelines and policies for conducting geotechnical studies and geotechnical construction practices in the construction of highways. Some sections of this manual are superseded by All Geotechnical Manual Users (AGMU) Memorandums which outline recent developments in departmental policies and guidelines.

This manual has been prepared to train the student to become a Mixture Aggregate Technician. The manual discusses the various aspects for handling and testing aggregates.

Aggregate Technician (12/18/08)
This manual has been prepared to train the student to become an Aggregate Technician. The manual discusses the various aspects for handling and testing aggregates as well explaining their origin.

HMA Level I (12/18/08)
This manual has been prepared to train the student to become a Hot Mix Asphalt Level I Technician. The manual discusses the various aspects for laboratory testing HMA using Superpave technology.

HMA Level II (12/18/07)
This manual has been prepared to train the student to become a Hot Mix Asphalt Level II Technician. The manual discusses the various aspects for proportioning, trouble-shooting and laydown of HMA.

HMA Level III (01/09/08)
This manual has been prepared to train the student to become a Hot Mix Asphalt Level III Technician. The manual discusses the various aspects for HMA Superpave mix design.

Nuclear Density Tester (11/07/07)
This manual has been prepared to train the student to become a Nuclear Density Technician. The manual discusses the various aspects for the use of a nuclear density gauge and the paperwork involved.

PCC Concrete Tester (12/31/13)
This manual has been prepared to train the student to become a Portland Cement Concrete Tester. The manual discusses the various aspects to test concrete only.

PCC Level I (11/01/13)
This manual has been prepared to train the student to become a Level I Portland Cement Concrete Technician. The manual discusses the various aspects to test concrete and make adjustments.

PCC Level II (12/01/13)
This manual has been prepared to train the student to become a Level II Portland Cement Concrete Technician. The manual discusses the various aspects to proportion concrete.

PCC Level III (12/01/13)
This manual has been prepared to train the student to become a Level III Portland Cement Concrete Technician. The manual discusses the various aspects to design a concrete mixture.

Soils Field Testing and Inspection (S-33) (11/20/13) This manual has been prepared to train the student to become a field inspector of soils and rock in the construction of highways. Successful completion of this course is required by IDOT Policy MAT-15, Quality Assurance Procedures for Construction.

Radiation Safety and Density by the Nuclear Method (S-34) (03/02/10)
This manual has been prepared to train the student in the safe practices and procedures of testing construction materials using portable nuclear gauges.

Illinois OK Stamps
Illinois OK (ILL OK) stamp numbers are applied to IDOT inspected materials by IDOT inspectors to indicate approval. These uniquely numbered marks are used as proper evidence of inspection for numerous IDOT construction materials. Following are two stamp number reference lists: one for IDOT source inspectors and one for consultant source inspectors.

Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) Mix Design Spreadsheet
This spreadsheet is designed to assist users in calculating PCC mix designs for submittal to IDOT. Additional files that may be helpful to the designer are included below:

PCC Mix Design (V2.4).xls - This is the actual PCC mix design spreadsheet. It uses the IDOT method of mix design using English or metric units.

Tutorial(V2.4).pdf - This document details the use of the mix design spreadsheet.

PV Example Mix Design.xls - This mix design follows the example given in the PCC Level III Technician Course manual.

Allowable H2O (V2.2.1).xls - This spreadsheet form is for determining maximum allowable water per batch.

 Blending Aggregates (V2.2).xls - This spreadsheet is for analyzing blended aggregates according to established practices as discussed in the PCC Level III Technician Course manual.
