2013 International Walk to School Day
October 9, 2013

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is again encouraging schools to participate in International Walk to School Day on October 9, 2013. 207 schools registered and participated in Illinois last year.

International Walk to School Day is an opportunity for schools to ensure children can safely walk/bike to school while also encouraging students to improve their own health by increasing exercise and the health of the environment by reducing vehicle emissions from cars and buses that take them to school.

The Illinois Department of Transportation administers the federally funded Illinois Safe Routes to School Program (SRTS). The Illinois Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program supports projects and programs that enable and encourage walking and bicycling to and from school. The program applies to schools serving grades Kindergarten through 8th grade. To see additional information, visit the Safe Routes to School national website at http://www.saferoutesinfo.org/. Schools can find more information and sign up at the official website for International Walk to School at http://www.walkbiketoschool.org/.

Please help IDOT recognize your school as a participant by filling out the participation form that is also attached in this email and emailing it back to Steve.Massey@illinois.gov.
