The sustained growth in rail passenger
travel in Illinois over the past six years and the
phenomenal response to the added frequencies, along with
ballooning fuel costs, are strong indicators of the
importance of the rail mode for maintaining balance in
our transportation system. These trends demonstrate the
need for more investments in passenger rail, and enhance
the convenience and efficiency of train travel in
Illinois. Providing more travel choices, increasing
capacity and improving train performance will continue
to generate substantial increases in ridership for both
state-sponsored and Amtrak system trains in the
foreseeable future. The table provides ridership figures
for all state trains over the past six years. |
