PROJECT OVERVIEW

Contract # CN60V61 and Contract # CN60J12

Proposed Work

The scope of work consists of the rehabilitation, reconstruction, replacement and/or removal of seven bridges in the interchange. The improvement will also include excess pavement removal, resurfacing, and minor realignments and reconstruction to increase driver expectation and minimize driver confusion. The overall improvement will be constructed under two separate contracts, 60V61 and 60J12.

Contract #60V61

The work for the first contract will begin in the summer of 2013 with major work to the structure carrying traffic from the Westbound Stony Island connector to the Stony Island Extension (labeled ramp Q on the map.) In addition, work to improve the two intersections of the Stony Island Extension ramps with 103rd Street will be completed. The work on Ramp Q will require a detour as the ramp is too narrow to allow stage construction. All the work in this contract is scheduled to be complete by the Fall of 2013.

  • Bridge Work:
    • Westbound Stony Island Connector over Stony Island Extension- Deck replacement, substructure rehabilitation, and bearing removal/replacement.
    • Westbound Stony Island Connector over Dorchester Avenue- Partial embankment placement
  • Improve the geometry at the east and west intersections of 103rd Street and Stony Island Extension ramps. Also upgrade traffic signals to current standards at these locations.
  • Resurface or replace pavement in localized areas requiring improved geometry
  • Replace lighting system with new lighting in portions of the interchange
  • Improve drainage system and provide detention to accommodate improvements and correct existing deficiencies in portions of the interchange

Maintenance of Traffic

  • Complete ramp closure: WB Stony Island Connector entrance ramp to I-94 from 103rd St. (for bridge deck replacement)
  • Detour includes use of Stony Island, 95th Street, State Street (for Dan Ryan) and Halsted St. (for I-57)
  • Staged construction elsewhere with no reduction in number of lanes open
  • Temporary pavement utilized in localized areas in order to keep ramps open
  • More information regarding the ramp closure will be provided closer to the actual closure date

Contract #60J12

The work for the second contract will begin in the late summer/early fall of 2013 with completion anticipated by the fall of 2014. Six bridges will be improved under this contract. All work can be completed utilizing stage construction, therefore motorists will be able to utilize the interchange complex during the construction work. Some night time full stops may be needed for beam erection for the bridge reconstruction, and some work may require lane shifts or flagger control during the day. There will be two weekend closures of the eastbound Stony Island Connector and detoured to eastbound I-94 to turnaround at 111th Street Interchange to allow the complex bridges’ decks to cure and connect to the first stage deck construction.

  • Bridge Work:
    • Eastbound Stony Island connector over I-94 Bridge replacement
    • Eastbound Stony Island connector over Stony Island Extension- Deck replacement, substructure rehabilitation and retaining wall
    • Westbound Stony Island connector over Dorchester Avenue- Complete removal.
    • Westbound Stony Island connector over Norfolk Southern Railroad and Woodlawn Avenue- Deck replacement and structure rehabilitation
    • Northbound Stony Island extension over 103rd Street- Bridge deck overlay and deck joint removal and replacement
    • Southbound Stony Island extension over 103rf Street- Bridge deck overlay and deck joint removal and replacement
  • Replace median barrier crash protection and improve roadside barrier treatments
  • Improve geometry and reconstruct entrance ramps from 103rd Street to NB Stony Island Extension/Westbound Stony Island connector
  • Resurface or replace pavement in localized areas requiring improved geometry
  • Remove excess pavement
  • Replace lighting system with new lighting and controllers throughout the remainder of the interchange
  • Improve drainage system to accommodate improvements and correct existing deficiencies throughout the remainder of the interchange
  • Extend surveillance system from south end of Dan Ryan to interchange
  • Upgrade signing to meet current standards

Maintenance of Traffic

  • Staged construction with reduced number of lanes open throughout construction
  • Temporary pavement utilized in localized areas in order to keep ramps open

Project Schedule

Construction has begun (Summer 2013) and is planned to be completed by Fall 2014 (weather dependent).
