PROJECT OVERVIEW

PROJECT SCOPE

The interchange of I-90/94 at Ohio and Ontario was constructed in 1959 and promotes access to and from the Central Business District of the City of Chicago, the Loop and the River North area of Chicago. The project is located in the City of  Chicago, Cook County and will provide reconstruction and realignment of the roadway  pavement and the structure carrying traffic from Ontario Street to Eastbound I-90/94, and rehabilitation of the structure carrying the ramp from Westbound Ontario Street to I90/94.

The existing structure is a cast-in-place concrete curved box girder bridge; this structure is difficult to inspect since the hatch doors that access the box girder are located over the live traffic of I-90/94. Based on the condition, the structure needs to be replaced, and to facilitate future maintenance, a more conventional bridge will be constructed. There are 15,300 vehicles using the Westbound ramp daily, therefore a design was developed which will construct a new structure on new alignment northeast and adjacent to the existing structure. This will allow the project to be constructed with a combination of staged traffic and use of some detours. The first stage will construct a potion of the new bridge adjacent to the existing structure while traffic utilizes the existing bridge. Once completed, traffic will be shifted onto the newly constructed bridge. The demolition and removal of the existing structure will require full closure of the Interstate beneath the structure while it is being removed. The closure to complete the removal will be separated into 3 separate sub stages, each taking place on separate weekends with closures beginning late Saturday and carrying into Sunday morning. Under the tab labeled “Detour Routes”, information regarding the detours will be added once a firm schedule has been developed. It will include timing of the detours as well as a plan showing the detour routes.

Work at the interchange will include rehabilitation of the structure which carries the tunnel carrying traffic over the Eastbound I-90/94 exit to Ohio Street. Minimal work on I-90/94 includes shoulder removal adjacent to the structures. The project will include landscaping and lighting improvements. No impacts to the existing reversible lane pavements or gates are required; lane closures of the reversible lanes will be needed during certain times but will be limited to off peak hours.
