Project Overview
PURPOSE & NEED OF PROJECT
- Improve highway safety
- Improve interchange configuration and efficiency
- Improve deteriorating pavement and bridge structure
- Improve traffic flow on Interstate 55 and Arsenal Road
SUMMARY OF PROJECT
- Removal of the existing Arsenal Road interchange
- Reconstruction of Arsenal Road interchange approximately 1 mile south of
the existing location
- Provide a 2-lane flyover ramp for traffic exiting southbound Interstate
55
- Provide a 2-lane loop ramp for traffic entering northbound Interstate 55
- Provide new single lane ramps for traffic entering southbound Interstate
55 and exiting northbound Interstate 55
- Extend Arsenal Road south along the east side of Interstate 55 to the
new interchange location
- Extend West Frontage Road east on a new bridge over Interstate 55 to
intersect Arsenal Road
- New signal signage for the new West Frontage Road/Arsenal Road
intersection
- New turn lanes along Arsenal Road at West Frontage Road and at
ExxonMobil Refinery
- Provide mitigation for wetland and orchid habitat impacts
- New high mast interchange lighting
