Welcome to the Interstate 55 at Central Avenue Interchange Website!
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT)
plans to rehabilitate and reconstruct the Interstate 55 at Central
Avenue Interchange. IDOT will begin construction on Friday,
September 9. IDOT plans to widen and replace the bridge deck over
Interstate 55 to convert the interchange to a single point
interchange. This project will include pavement replacement on the
ramps and roadways connected with Central Avenue. IDOT will replace
traffic signals, install new traffic signals, and improve lighting
throughout the project area.
The purpose of the $37.7 million dollar project is to improve safety
and ease congestion at Central Avenue and Interchange 55. This
project will alleviate the number of accidents throughout the
project area and improve access to Central Avenue and Interstate 55.
This site has been created to facilitate public
input and provide information about the project and schedule. We

UPDATE--September, 2011
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT)
continues to work toward a target completion date of
Fall 2012. Center piers for the two new bridges that
carry traffic over Interstate 55 are scheduled to be
constructed this fall. Staging of traffic on Interstate
55 will be installed the week of September 19, 2011,
weather permitting. Later this month we anticipate
staging of the east Frontage Road just south of existing
Arsenal Road to allow grading operation for the
extension of Arsenal Road to begin. The road will remain
open to traffic during construction except for
occasional flagging of traffic to safely move equipment
and materials into the work zone. A new section of the
east Frontage Road adjacent to the new interchange is
expected to be completed in early October 2011.
Staging on Interstate 55 will shift traffic up to 8 feet
to the right and close the shoulders on northbound and
southbound to provide a work zone for the construction
of bridge piers. Two lanes will remain open in each
direction. Occasional night time closures should be
anticipated for construction activities.
IDOT will continue rock excavation, mass grading,
drainage work, construction of retaining walls, roadbed
preparation and paving this Fall as weather conditions
allow.
The new interchange ramps and bridge structures over
Interstate 55 are scheduled to be completed in September
2012. |
WORK ZONE SAFETY
Did
you know work zone fatalities are down 29.6 percent compared to
2003? Aggressive law enforcement and awareness campaigns and
significant improvements to work zone safety traffic control reduced
Illinois work zone fatalities from 44 in 2003, including 5 workers,
to provisionally 30 with 3 workers killed in 2010.
So, Give ‘em a brake…slow down for their sake
and yours!
IDOT appreciates your patience and understanding as we work to
improve the roadways in your community.
